You will need to look into the type of policy that best suits your needs and your budget. There are three types of car insurance cover:
* Third Party: This offers you the minimum of cover that the law allows. It protects you in the event of you being in an accident that was your fault, the other driver (or persons involved) can claim the damages to their car or person, from you, this can work out extremely expensive (especially if there is a person hurt in an accident). Third party insurance will cover these expenses, and also any legal fees, in the event of legal action being taken out on you. Any damage you receive if the accident was your fault, is not covered by this policy. N.B: The third party policy usually has an excess of about £100, this means that whenever you make a claim on your policy, you are obliged to pay the first £100.
* Third Party, Fire and Theft: This policy is similar to, Third party, however you have the additional protection against your car being stolen, or involved in a fire, provided it was not your fault. In these events the insurance company will give you the monetary value of your car (assuming the car is un-repairable), or the amount it would cost to repair. You will still be obliged however, to pay the excess (usually about £100).
* Fully Comprehensive: This policy covers everything that Third party, fire and theft covers, and in addition to this, protects you against any accidental damage, or in theory, any damage whatsoever, caused to your car. In addition to this the excess that you will be liable to pay on any claims you make will be greatly reduced, usually only about £50. This policy may also provide you with a courtesy car in the event of your car being ‘off the road’ and/or breakdown cover, however you will have to check out the individual insurers to see if they offer these benefits. N.B; you must always read the small print on the insurance agreement to see what your policy does not cover you for.
The better the level of cover the more expensive the policy will be, so make sure that when you are comparing the prices of different insurers, you are looking into the prices of the level of cover you wish to undertake.
