Young Driver Insurance Providers

I am a young driver, and the quotations I am being given are more than my car is worth. Can I do anything about this?

Although you may find a better deal by shopping around, young drivers will always be more expensive to insure, due to the greater risks involved. Remember that you are not just insuring your car. You are insuring yourself against the liability for damage to someone else's car, which may be worth a great deal more. We would suggest trying any of the following to reduce the amount you have to pay:

  • Look for specialist brokers dealing with young drivers. [Find students' and young drivers' car insurance providers online]

  • Try a few of the mainsteam car insurance providers. Our experience has shown that Tesco insurance often provide good value for young drivers.

  • Take an advanced driving test to improve your skill levels. Most insurers will give you a discount for this.

  • Insure your car in your parents' name, or that of your brother or sister.

  • Avoid newer cars, or anything with a turbo engine.

  • If none of the above can help, then you may find it easier to wait a few years before getting your own car.

  • If you use a bike, or walk to work, put aside the money you save by not having a car into a high interest ISA, and use this towards buying your first car, and paying your insurance premium (which will be a lot lower by then).
