Serial speeders see car insurance premiums increase by over half

Tue, 29 Mar 2011

Motorists who get caught speeding numerous times face far higher car insurance premiums, new research shows.

A study by comparison website moneysupermarket.com found that a driver with a speeding conviction and six points on their license will pay 19 per cent more on average than someone with a clean license.

However, those who continue to offend face even higher car insurance costs, with the average premium for a driver with nine points 54 per cent higher than for those with a clean licence.

Peter Harrison, car insurance expert at moneysupermarket.com, said insurers "clearly take a dim view" on drivers who speed.

"Even going just above the speed limit can add huge additional costs to your car insurance, and for repeat offenders, some insurers may even refuse to cover you, so motorists should take extra care to ensure they stick to the speed restrictions," he commented.

Research by moneysupermarket.com shows that car insurance premiums rose by 44 pence per day on average in 2010.
