One in six admit to uninsured driving

Tue, 15 Mar 2011

Motorists have been warned that there are a surprisingly high number of people on the road without car insurance .

According to a survey by moneysupermarket.com, one in six motorists (16 per cent), admit to having driven a car without being insured .

Of these drivers, some 27 per cent said they did not have insurance because they were not aware they needed it, while 38 per cent blamed being in between insurance policies as the reason for driving uninsured .

On top of this, nine per cent said they just could not be bothered to arrange insurance and six per cent said there is no point having insurance as they do not believe they will crash.

Peter Harrison, head of car insurance at moneysupermarket.com, said: " Uninsured drivers cost the industry £500 million each year, which as a result adds an average of £30 to every motorist's premium."

It follows this week's report into the rising cost of car insurance by the Transport Select Committee, which said insurance firms needed to do more to tackle fraud in the industry as this was contributing to higher premiums .
