The British Insurance Brokers Association (BIBA) has welcomed government plans to crack down on those who drive without car insurance .
Mike Penning, secretary of state transport, this week addressed BIBA at a parliamentary reception in the House of Commons, in which he claimed that the new continuous insurance enforcement (CIE) law will help force uninsured drivers off the road and bring down premiums .
Under CIE, it will be illegal for a vehicle owner not to have insurance even if the vehicle is not being driven, unless they have made a Statutory Off Road Notification .
Graeme Trudgill, BIBA's head of corporate affairs, said: "CIE has been a great example of how the insurance sector can work closely with government for the benefit of motorists .
"We will be working hard over the next few months to ensure insurance brokers are ready for the launch of CIE and doing everything we can to help motorists comply."
It follows a recent report on car insurance costs by the Transport Select Committee, which said insurance providers needed to do more to tackle fraud to help bring down premiums.
