Motorists could be risking car insurance claims as well as their safety by having a messy vehicle, it has been warned.
According to comparison site confused.com, rubbish left in the car can cause accidents if, for example, an empty drinks can becomes stuck under the pedals.
It found that some 18 per cent of drivers admit being involved in an accident caused by rubbish in the car.
Despite this, 50 per cent of UK motorists clean their just car once a year or even less frequently, while eight per cent of car owners have never cleaned the inside of their car.
Gareth Kloet, head of car insurance at Confused.com, said: "We're encouraging Brits to spring clean their cars and de-clutter.
"A clean car provides a safer driving environment, which benefits all UK motorists . The cost of meeting claims after an accident contributes to all our car insurance premiums, so decreasing accident numbers will save money as well as lives "
Car insurance provider Churchill recently reported it has found a number of unusual items in cars recovered from accidents, including an ATM machine, found in a car involved in a robbery, and a prosthetic leg.
