Government set to crack down on uninsured drivers

Mon, 10 Jan 2011

More than one million Brits could see their cars crushed from March as the government seeks to crack down on uninsured drivers .

The coalition's ambition is to tackle untraced and uninsured motorists, who are blamed for killing 160 people and injuring 23,000 victims every year.

It is currently illegal to drive an uninsured car but not to own one.

However, road safety minister Mike Penning is set to unveil plans to make it an offence to keep an uninsured vehicle, even if the owner does not drive it.

Mr Penning hopes the move will cut the £30 a year that responsible motorists pay in premiums to cover uninsured drivers' crashes.

This comes after the Institute of Advanced Motorists recently urged car insurance customers to make safe driving one of their resolutions for 2011.

While building up skills is a way to improve overall safety and confidence, the institute said it would also result in lower car insurance premiums .
