Car insurance customers told not to leave keys in ignition

Mon, 31 Jan 2011

In news that is likely to interest car insurance customers, new research has revealed that around half of car drivers nip back indoors while the engine is running - oblivious to the fact that there could be no payout if their vehicle is stolen.

According to a study by swiftcover.com, some £12.7million worth of vehicles are taken from outside homes each year after the keys are left in the ignition.

Some 47 per cent of motorists do it regularly and many are unaware it could invalidate their insurance, the poll showed.

Robin Reames, claims director at swiftcover.com, remarked: "Leaving a car with keys in the ignition provides a perfect opportunity for thieves and we, as motorists, are especially likely to do this at this time of year.

"People have an 'it won't happen to me' attitude and think it's fine to nip into the house . In reality theft can, and does, happen."
