Car insurance customers offered useful advice

January is one of the busiest months of the year for car insurance renewals, it has been noted.

Writing for CityWire, Lorna Bourke observed that if you paid your last premium by credit card, consumers should be aware that unless they notify their current insurer well in advance that they are switching to another company, many providers debit credit cards with the next year's premium.

"Don't assume that you can save money by cutting the cover from fully comprehensive to third party, fire and theft only," she added.

"Many insurers charge more or less the same for the lower cover - probably because they assume that the owner of a low value car who isn't bothered about repairing it will not be such a careful driver."

Meanwhile, lovemoney.com reporter Robert Powell recently dismissed suggestions that the colour of a car has any impact on the cost of an insurance policy .
