Thousands of car insurance customers are putting their cover at risk by giving false information to their provider to keep their premiums down, according to a trade body.
Britons who failed to disclose important facts risked invalidating their policies, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has warned.
Insurers may therefore refuse to pay out if they had to make a claim.
Furthermore, they could also face a criminal conviction, and find it harder and more expensive to secure insurance in the future.
Nick Starling, the ABI's director of general insurance and health, commented: "Trying to deceive your insurer is a false economy that will cost you dear.
"Of course everyone wants to get the best motor insurance deal, but being less than truthful is not the way to do it."
The ABI is the trade of the UK's insurance, investment and savings industry.
The UK insurance industry is, in fact, the third largest in the world and the largest in Europe.
