The DVLA has reminded motorists that they could be impacted by a major new change in car insurance laws that comes into effect this spring.
It will mean that all vehicles will have to be insured at all times, even if they are not being driven, unless the DVLA has been formally notified that the car is off the road.
Those who fail to adhere to the new law could receive a £100 fine, while, if they continue not to insure their vehicle, it could then be seized and destroyed.
The DVLA, the British Insurance Brokers Association and the Motor Insurers' Bureau have launched a campaign to raise awareness of the new laws with information being distributed with all V11 tax renewal forms from March in addition to guidance available on Direct.gov.
DVLA corporate affairs director David Evans said: "It is vitally important that motorists understand the change and how it will impact on them."
Car insurance laws could see further change this year following an EU legal case that may result in insurance providers being unable to charge smaller premiums for women drivers . A decision on the case is expected in March.
