New figures show insurance providers have been faced with £1.43 billion worth of claims after December's freezing temperatures, uSwitch.com reported.
Some 467,000 claims for home and car insurance were made during the big freeze late last year, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) said.
According to the ABI, this figure comprised of 190,000 home insurance claims for things such as burst pipes, amounting to £900 million in damage.
"The big freeze highlighted that when bad weather strikes there is no substitute for insurance," said Nick Starling, the director of general insurance and health at ABI.
"During a similar bout of freezing temperatures the previous winter, insurers paid out £700 million in weather-related claims. Despite the last couple of winters being costly, insurers will continue to do all they can to ensure that the market remains as competitive as possible for consumers."
Earlier this week, Churchill Car Insurance warned motorists that they are putting themselves in jeopardy this winter through poor visibility.
It was found that a quarter of male drivers risk having an accident because they do not clear their windscreens .
