Motorists who fail to get regular eye checks could be more at risk of having to make a car insurance claim .
That is according to motor insurance provider Swinton, which has urged drivers to ensure their eyesight meets legal requirements by regularly going to the opticians.
Under DVLA requirements, drivers must be able to read a number plate from a distance of 20 meters, either with or without corrective lenses.
However, a survey by the company found that over a quarter (26 per cent) of drivers have not visited an optician for between four and six years.
Another 14 per cent have not had their eyes tested for between six and eight years, ten per cent have not been tested for between eight and ten years and six per cent have not been to the opticians for over ten years.
Steve Chelton, insurance development manager at Swinton, said: " Motorists who drive with poor eyesight also increase their chances of having an accident, which will lead to a costly car insurance claims and a possible increase in future car insurance premiums ."
