Car insurance premiums for young motorists could fall by at least ten per cent if a 'graduated licence' scheme were introduced, it has been claimed.
Under the proposed scheme, newly qualified teenage drivers would be restricted from driving at night and carrying young passengers.
Swiftcover.com, the car insurance provider, has welcomed the idea of special licences for 17 to 19-year-old motorists, which could save 200 lives a year and lead to 1,700 fewer serious injuries on British roads.
Craig Staniland, underwriting director for swiftcover.com, commented: "Introducing a scheme that would limit the time young and newly qualified drivers spend on the road would enable teenage drivers to get valuable road experience under safer conditions and help instil a great sense of responsibility and safety."
Earlier this week, Defaqto, the independent financial research company, revealed that almost half of all car insurance policies now provide specific cover for child car seats, compared to just three per cent in 2004.
