Age UK, which provides home insurance and car insurance through Ageas Insurance, has issued some advice to Britons to help protect homes and cars against the winter chill.
Ahead of what is expected to be another cold winter, the provider has advised clearing drains to reduce blockages, cutting back trees to avoid damage to homes if they are blown over and insulating outside taps.
Added to this, Age UK has recommended sweeping chimneys to ensure they are working efficiently.
Gordon Morris, managing director of Age UK Enterprises, remarked: "Winter has officially started with the first cold snap forecast to hit the UK with vengeance.
"With most parts of the country braced for freezing temperatures, heavy rain, snow and even fog, Age UK Enterprises recommends homeowners take simple steps to winter proof their homes and cars."
This comes after research by moneysupermarket.com found that a third (33 per cent) of serious or fatal motor accidents occur in the dark, while almost 4,500 accidents happened in snowy and icy conditions.
The price comparison site reminded Britons to be prepared before they hit the roads in potentially hazardous winter weather.
