Unearthing an attractive car insurance premium online could prove impossible for motorists who leave their keys in the ignition, UIA.co.uk reported.
This will leave the policy invalid, experts have warned.
Although motorists may be tempted to do so when they defrost the windows on a cold morning, officers from Greater Manchester Police have advised against the practice.
" Insurance policies may be invalidated, so the decision to leave the vehicle unattended with the engine running could be an expensive one," chief inspector Lindsay Atherton told the news provider.
She added that staying with the car is the only way to ensure an opportunistic thief does not take advantage of the situation.
Earlier this week, Will Thomas, head of motor at Confused.com, urged the government to work with insurance providers, regulatory bodies and associations in an effort to halt the steep rises in car insurance premiums.
He told an enquiry into the cost of motor insurance that it was essential the reasons for the prices were tackled with a collaborative approach.
