Britons urged to take out adequate car insurance cover

Fri, 26 Nov 2010

Around one out of every 20 motorists drives without adequate car insurance cover, it has been noted.

Writing for the Daily Telegraph, Kara Gammell observed that cover costs every driver about £30 a year on their premium.

These uninsured drivers are ten times more likely to have been convicted of drink driving, according to Ms Gammell, who said that they are also five times more likely to have been involved in road collisions.

"For those people prepared to drive without insurance the maximum fine is £1,000, but in practice they are fined an average of about £200 if caught - significantly less than a typical annual insurance premium," she said.

"In fact, you could get fined more for being caught without a television licence or evading a fare on a London bus."

To avoid having to make unnecessary car insurance claims, Britons are advised to do all they can to keep their vehicles in good condition over the winter months.
