Younger drivers have been advised on how engine sizes can have a drastic impact upon the cost of a car insurance policy .
Research by Confused.com has found that 17 per cent of new drivers are choosing a car with a 1.2-litre engine, while 75 per cent are choosing engines of 1.4 litres or under.
The firm said that the lower premiums offered by insurance companies because of smaller engines are especially important at the moment for young drivers .
Will Thomas, head of motor at Confused.com, commented: "With the cost of motoring rocketing in 2010, ways to reduce the outlay are on everyone's minds. It's particularly bad news for young drivers - who already pay the most when it comes to premiums.
"The best way to keep the costs down is by shopping around for cover, as not all insurance providers rate age the same way and some companies specialise in covering younger drivers."
AA's latest research showed that car insurance premiums for female drivers aged between 17 and 22 rose by seven per cent in the first quarter of 2010.
