Uninsured drivers face humiliation in Durham

Wed, 12 May 2010

Drivers caught without car insurance are to be made an example of in Durham by the police.

The Durham Constabulary is to place stickers on the windows of cars that are found to have no policy covering them, after officers have used automatic number plate recognition equipment to check and seize them.

It is hoped that this will humiliate the uninsured drivers, adding to the misery of having to pay fees to have the car released and the risk of having points added to a licence.

Chief inspector Andy Huddleston, deputy head of operational support at Durham Constabulary, explained how the force seized 900 uninsured vehicles in 2009 and was looking to extend its efforts this year.

He added: "Every time we seize a car it will have a sticker put on its window so that members of the public know why it has been stopped and, hopefully, this will both embarrass the driver and deter other people who might consider taking the risk."

According to a recent survey by the AA, uninsured driving currently makes up 1.5 per cent of motoring convictions .
