Car insurance warning over pedestrians on mobile phones

Thu, 20 May 2010

Pedestrians using their mobile phones as they walk could pose a threat to car insurance customers, it has been claimed.

A study by car insurance company esure has found that more than six in ten people make a phone call while they cross a road, while one in three send text messages .

With browsing the internet and reading emails also causes of distraction for pedestrians, the firm has dubbed the phenomenon 'netwalking'.

Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at esure car insurance, said: "Mobile technology has revolutionised the way we communicate and absorb information, but the worry, as this study shows, is that it can have a detrimental impact on our day-to-day lives.

"Our advice to pedestrians is to remove this temptation altogether by leaving mobile and technology gadgets in their pockets or bags to ensure your attention is solely on crossing the road ahead and the judging of fast-moving traffic."

Research published by Sainsbury's Car Insurance recently revealed that, over the course of a month, around 12 per cent of motorists admitted to using their phones while driving.
