Advice has been given to car insurance customers about what to do if they have an accident caused by a poor road surface.
The VBRA, the trade association for vehicle body building, CV, Car Body and SMART repair, has claimed that poor road conditions are leading to an increase in accidents and damage to vehicles .
Although it has given advice to always exercise caution when driving on a poor road, the organisation has accepted that car damage is inevitable.
Malcolm Tagg, the director general of the VBRA, explained how car insurance customers should go about recording any incidents caused by poor roads.
He said: "If possible photograph and measure the size of the road surface that caused the damage and report it by phone as soon as you are able. Back this up with correspondence to the council responsible together with all supportive evidence advising that you will be looking to them to make good any financial losses you incur.
"If appropriate, copy this to your insurers who should be able to assist you to achieve some form of financial settlement."
According to the AA, damage to cars caused by potholes in February is estimated to have cost insurance companies £2.85 million.
