Drivers thinking about borrowing someone else's vehicle have been warned about the car insurance risks they may be taking.
Research by comparison site Confused.com has found that 27 per cent of motorists aged under 25 believe they are automatically covered when they drive other people's cars, even though this is not the case most of the time.
Meanwhile, a worrying number were also under the impression that a 'driving other cars' extension gave them cover against damage, even though it actually only gives third party cover .
Will Thomas, head of motor insurance at Confused.com, said: "Shocking results like these suggest there may well be a lot of mistakenly uninsured cars on the road; people need to be made aware of the limitations of their cover.
"Policy features like this need serious consideration when you are looking for your car insurance."
Another car insurance consideration, particularly over holiday periods, is to make sure that any driving done abroad is covered by an insurance policy .
