Young drivers who have just passed their tests have been given advice on cheap car insurance and cutting costs in other areas.
A survey by Confused.com has found that, on average, girls need 21 lessons before they pass their test, with boys needing just 17 lessons.
Meanwhile, males passed their tests at an average age of 19 years and eight months, with females having to wait until the age of 20 years and six months.
Will Thomas, head of motor at Confused.com, explained how, even though the cost of driving is increasing for young motorists, there are ways of cutting costs once the test has been passed.
"The good news is there is light at the end and there are some easy steps that new drivers can take to drive down the costs, including taking Pass Plus, choosing a smaller vehicle and, the simplest and most cost effective, shopping around for cover online."
AA's recent British Insurance Premium Index reported that premiums for female drivers aged between 17 and 22 went up by seven per cent in the first quarter of 2010.
