Motorists considering a journey to the continent in their vehicle have been told to check their car insurance policies for adequate cover.
With millions of Brits expected to travel abroad over the summer months, drivers have been warned that many policies do not cover a trip outside of the UK.
M&S' head of general insurance, Andrew Ferguson, said: "With the recent air travel problems, many people may be looking for an alternative to flying. Travelling by car avoids the risk of flight delays and cancellations.
"However, it is crucial for drivers who are making longer journeys by car for the first time, to make sure they have the adequate car insurance and breakdown cover in place, so that they have peace of mind should the worse happen."
Other advice from the company includes preparing a journey properly with a route planner, while having some local currency at hand to pay at toll booths would also be useful.
Strikes by airline crews, as well as the threat of disruption from volcanic ash, has meant that many travellers have had to reconsider their options for getting out of the UK recently.
