A new report has shown how the number of people with driving convictions has risen over the last decade.
The findings from AA's one million customers show that 18 per cent of motorists have at least one driving conviction, with 85 per cent of them coming from speeding offences.
A decade ago, only 14 per cent of drivers had convictions and in the new report the gap between men and women in terms of convictions has also been narrowed.
Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance, has warned of the impact driving convictions can have on car insurance premiums.
He said: "Whatever your age or sex, insurers take notice of driving offences, especially multiple offenders and this is reflected in premiums.
"That's because regular offenders are much more likely to make an insurance claim than those who have a clean license."
Zurich increased its premiums by 20 per cent earlier this year, partly attributing it to an increase in compensations claims .
