Drivers have been urged to look around for different products before settling on renewing their car insurance .
Moneysupermarket.com says that its research has shown that 22 per cent of drivers renew their existing car insurance instead of shopping around in the belief that they will not find a better deal or simply because they cannot be bothered.
Steve Sweeney, head of car insurance at moneysupermarket.com, said that may drivers will find attractive deals in their first year, only to be hit by bigger prices when they renew.
He added: "Rest assured if you can't be bothered to shop around in the second year, the providers will be rubbing their hands with glee as a renewal price will often include a hefty premium - hardly the thanks deserved for being a loyal customer."
It was recently suggested by M&S Car Insurance that one in five motorists do not feel confident about using their vehicle when they first drive it.
With 12 per cent also not reading the manual before setting off, they were running the risk of losing any no claims bonuses .
