Car insurance warning for green motorists

Fri, 19 Mar 2010

Motorists looking at buying green cars have been told about the impact it could have on their car insurance and finances .

A recent survey of Swinton Car Insurance customers found that the top green car was the Toyota Prius followed, in order, by the Honda Civic IMA, the G-Wiz, the Toyota Aygo and the Smart Fortwo .

Steve Chelton, insurer development manager at Swinton, said that, because of the lower CO2 emissions, many of the green cars were either exempt from or subject to lower road taxes.

Despite this and the fact that drivers in London could also be exempt from the congestion charge, he also had a warning.

He said: "Motorists need to be aware of any implications on their car insurance. Premiums may be higher as the parts for greener cars are more unusual and as a result repair costs may be elevated."

A report by AXA car insurance recently said that British motorists were among the worst in Europe when it came to green driving habits, with 84 per cent using their vehicle every day.
