Car insurance affected by poor maintenance knowledge

Mon, 22 Mar 2010

Research by a car insurance company has shown that van drivers are the most knowledgeable when it comes to maintenance.

According to a poll conducted by Swinton, 97 per cent of van drivers know how to change their tyre while only 76 per cent of car drivers could say the same.

In addition to this, 81 per cent of van drivers knew what the correct tyre pressure was for their vehicle, compared to just 20 per cent of car drivers.

Phil Moss, commercial vehicle manager at Swinton, welcomed the knowledge of van drivers, although he also warned that the ignorance of other motorists could have an impact on their car insurance .

He said: "All drivers should have at least basic knowledge of their vehicles and should not rely on other people to carry out maintenance work, such as filling up tyres and topping up oil, to avoid unnecessary claims which can lead to an increase in insurance premiums."

The Post Office recently warned that cutting corners on car repairs and maintenance could put drivers at risk, especially in bad weather conditions.
