Drivers have been given advice after new figures showed the impact of the weather conditions on car insurance premiums.
According to the Association of British Insurers, £395 million was paid out to motorists in December and January, with many of the claims resulting from the wintry conditions.
Advice from Moneyextra.com on keeping premiums low includes avoiding making claims for small dents and increasing the excess.
Peter Gerrard, head of insurance at the organisations, also says: "If your policy is consistently becoming too much for you to afford, look into downsizing. There are some fantastic economic cars that will not only save you money on your insurance but also on your fuel costs another increasing motor expense."
One of the most common causes of damage that came about over the winter was the emergence of potholes on roads across the country.
According to the AA, claims resulting from pothole damage have increased by over 600 per cent in the last three years and they cost insurance companies £2.85m in February alone.
