Drivers have been urged to check their car insurance policy to see cover for road rage and car jacking incidents is included.
According to Defaqto, around 90 per cent of policies do not cover these areas, which tend to concern older drivers more than younger ones.
The organisation has reminded motorists that they may suffer personal injuries or need treatment for trauma as a result of road rage.
Mike Powell, insight analyst for general insurance at Defaqto, explained some of the nuances of car insurance cover for road rage incidents.
He said: "Although there are varying levels of benefits and cover provided following a car jacking or road rage incident, always be aware of the policy exclusions applicable for these covers.
"A typical exclusion is if the assault is by a relative or person known to the insured and a specific exclusion that is applicable to road rage cover is if the incident is proven to have been initiated by the policyholder."
Sainsburys Car Insurance is among the providers that offers support and compensation for victims of road rage or car jackings.
