More motorists seek convicted car insurance

Thu, 17 Jun 2010

Swinton has called for a renewed focus on the dangers of reckless driving after receiving an increased number of car insurance enquiries from motorists with speeding convictions.

According to the car insurance provider, the last 12 months has seen the company field 42 per cent more approaches made by customers with a speeding conviction to their name.

While the latest figures show road casualties were down by seven per cent between 2007 and 2008, 25 per cent of the 2,538 reported fatalities in 2008 have been attributed to speeding.

As a result, Steve Chelton, insurer development manager for Swinton car insurance, believes more needs to be done to combat irresponsible driving habits.

"Speeding is one of the greatest dangers on our roads yet our research shows that in the last 12 months there has been a massive increase in the number of drivers with speeding convictions," he commented.

"This is extremely worrying, and while we have seen high-profile drink driving and mobile phone campaigns in recent months, perhaps there needs to be a focus on reckless driving."

Yesterday (June 16th) saw the publication of a new report which called for the drink-drive limit to be lowered from 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood to 50mg to help cut the number of alcohol-related road deaths.
