The popularity of driving gadgets in the over-50s age group has prompted Saga to urge motorists to keep any expensive items hidden from view when they leave their cars unattended and to check to make sure they have adequate car insurance cover .
Research conducted by the car insurance provider shows that, far from being the technophobes their stereotype suggests they should be, over-50s value gadgets which either enhance their driving experience or make their journeys safer.
As a result, sat navs and cruise control are cited as useful by 32 per cent and 20 per cent of over-50 drivers respectively, while iPods, Blackberries and smartphones prove less popular.
However, Andrew Goodsell, executive chairman of Saga Group, has noted that the implications of gadget use on car insurance should not be ignored.
"Installing high-tech gadgets, or leaving personal possessions such as mobiles and laptops in the car is an attraction to thieves, so we are urging people to make sure they keep high value items out of sight and to check they have adequate insurance cover," he confirmed.
Earlier this year, just one in 30 Saga customers with motorcycle insurance said they felt safe on Britain's roads.
