Car insurance customers have been warned of the dangers surrounding drink and drug driving this summer .
With the World Cup set to be the centre of attention for the next month, West Midlands Police has begun working with the West Midlands Casualty Reduction Scheme to target offenders.
The force has reminded drivers that, of the 59 people killed and 969 seriously injured in road traffic accidents across the area in 2008, one fifth were because of motorists above the drink-drive limit.
Inspector Greg Jennings, traffic manager for the east of the force, said: "Throughout June we will conduct tests on every driver suspected of having consumed drink or drugs, as usual.
"We will also focus our efforts on offering voluntary breath tests to hundreds of drivers stopped in targeted road checks, an initiative that has been well received in other trial areas of the country."
The World Cup starts on Friday (June 11th), with hosts South Africa playing Mexico, while the tournament will culminate on July 11th when the two finalists meet in Johannesburg .
