Young drivers have been told to look around for a cheap insurance policy and stick to cars with smaller engines.
With the 75th anniversary of the driving test being celebrated, Confused.com has highlighted the fact that motorists aged between 17 and 20 saw a 6.6 per cent rise in the average cost of their car insurance policies in the last quarter.
Will Thomas, head of motor at Confused.com, explained how taking Pass Plus or sticking to a third party fire and theft policy may be the best option to keep costs down.
He added: "The good news is there is light at the end at the tunnel and there are some easy steps that new drivers can take to drive down the costs, the easiest being shopping around for cover online.
"It only takes a few minutes and can save a substantial amount. All insurance companies rate young drivers differently and it's only by comparing them all side by side that you can get a true picture of the best deal."
Research by the price comparison site recently revealed that women take an average of 21 lessons before they pass their test, while men take just 17.
