Motorists looking for cheap car insurance have been given some valuable advice about which policies provide courtesy cars .
According to financial research company Defaqto, 49 per cent of car insurance policies do not provide a courtesy car if a vehicle is lost or stolen, with only 23 per cent of policies offering a courtesy car as standard.
This is despite the fact that the provision of a courtesy car is high up on the priority list of many drivers when they are looking for an insurance quote .
Mike Powell, insight analyst for general insurance at Defaqto, said: "When purchasing cover, consumers must ensure that they are aware of the provider's courtesy car provision.
"Finding out that a courtesy car is not available when you need one could be very costly, especially if you have to hire a car to continue your day to day activities."
Meanwhile, motorists were recently advised by Moneysupermarket.com that they may not necessarily save money by opting for a third-party car insurance policy.
