The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has revealed how car insurance fraud went up last year.
According to the organisation, there were 122,000 insurance claims worth £840 million in 2009, up 14 per cent on 2008.
Of this, fraud totalling £410 million was related to car insurance, often from bogus personal injury claims .
Nick Starling, the ABI's director of general insurance and health, explained how the industry is working hard to battle car insurance fraud and to protect the honest majority of drivers.
"Whether claiming against a third party for bogus personal injury or on their own insurance, fraudsters are more likely than ever to get caught, leading to more expensive and harder-to-obtain insurance and credit, and the possibility of a criminal record," he said.
One of the main consequences of both fraud and personal injury claims is a rise in the cost of car insurance premiums for all motorists.
