Car insurance customers have been warned that being in possession of a cloned vehicle could lead to their insurance policy being invalidated.
A recent episode of BBC One's Fake Britain highlighted the problem of cloned cars, and explained how anyone buying a used motor should check the documents and cross-reference the engine and chassis numbers.
Services such as HPI Check can also be used to look into the provenance of vehicles, and Nicola Johnson, consumer services manager, explained the issue.
She said: "BBC's Fake Britain Fake Cars threw the spotlight on a problem which all used vehicle buyers should be concerned about.
"Although a vehicle history check cannot directly tell a buyer if a bike or car is a clone, a buyer can use the HPI Check to help look for the tell tale signs that the vehicle is not legitimate."
Another factor that could lead to a car insurance policy being invalidated is the policy of fronting, when a parent is put down as the main driver, even though the main user of a vehicle is in fact their child.
