Black box recorders for vehicles could eventually be used to punish people without car insurance .
New technologies have been developed by Intel in Santa Clara that are aimed at creating intelligent cars which, along with street cameras and sensors, could lead to automated driving.
Neil Greig, director of policy and research at the Institute of Advanced Motorists, explained how black boxes could eventually be used to help keep information about events leading up to an accident and also in the enforcement of car insurance laws .
He said: "Ultimately, the people who would really appreciate having this sort of stuff are the ones least likely to have it, i.e. the ones driving without insurance or any care for other people at all.
"If you have a record of driving without insurance then perhaps the installation of a black box might be something that a court could insist you have."
Meanwhile, the government recently welcomed the launch of the production of the Toyota Auris Hybrid car in north Wales, safeguarding 400 jobs at the company's two plants in Deeside and Derby.
