Car insurance customers have been told that they could save money by going through price comparison sites .
The recent AA car insurance index showed that, while the average price of a policy now stands at £980, through a price comparison site it is £783.
Lee Griffin, business development director at Gocompare.com, explained how, although there was conflicting data about the rising cost of car insurance, sites like his could prove useful to motorists.
"There are signs that the rate of increase has slowed of late, indicating that most insurers have now corrected their positions," he added.
"Insurers have finally had to face up to the new threats in the market such as bodily injuries and the 'claims farmers' that make it easier for people to claim and the credit hire industry which provides more costly replacement cars rather than courtesy cars ."
The rise in personal injury claims has been one of the causes of rising car insurance costs in recent years.
