Despite drivers over the age of 70 often being seen to be more of a risk on the road, they are no more likely to make a car insurance claim than younger motorists, a driving standards charity has revealed.
According to a report from the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), older motorists are just as safe on the road as their younger counterparts and should find it just as easy to find cheap car insurance .
Neil Greig, IAM director of policy and research, remarked that in percentage terms, motorists aged over 70 are actually safer as their restrained and cautious style means they are involved in fewer accidents .
He said: "Just eight per cent of drivers are over 70 and they are involved in around four per cent of injury crashes, but of the 15 per cent of drivers who are in their teens and 20s, 34 per cent are involved in injury crashes."
Other findings of the report include the fact that the number of male drivers over the age of 70 hitting the road will be double its current figure in the next 20 years and that they are less likely to drive in more hazardous road conditions.
The results of a joint poll by YouGov and Admiral last year determined that the worst drivers on UK roads were 'girl and boy racers'.
