Motorists urged to check insurance policy for speeding premiums

Tue, 26 Jan 2010

Anyone looking for cheap car insurance is being advised to compare how their premiums may be affected by speeding convictions .

According to moneysupermarket.com, in addition to getting points on their licence, many speeders risk seeing their insurance premiums double, especially if they have multiple convictions.

Steve Sweeney, head of motor insurance at moneysupermarket.com, understands why insurance companies punish speeders, saying that the offenders, mainly young men, can cause accidents .

However, he added: "There is an even greater need to compare prices if you have a speeding conviction.

"Although about a third of providers will not increase the premium for one blemish on your record, serial speeders will find fewer providers willing to insure them and at increased prices."

Zurich announced earlier this month that it would increase its premiums by 20 per cent this year. It largely blamed this on a 50 per cent rise in injury claims over the last few years.

The company also suggested that premiums may go up even further if current trends in injury claims continue.
