Drivers could be saved from having to make claims on their car insurance if everyone starts reporting pothole sightings.
As winter conditions begin to die down around the country, many roads will be left damaged, according to the Local Government Association.
Local authorities are asking the public to report any potholes to them so that they can quickly fix them, although wet conditions will still make it difficult to deal with every case.
Councillor David Sparks, chair of the Local Government Association Transport Board, said: "The wet combined with the freezing conditions destroys tarmac very quickly. As the ice seeps into the road it expands and rips chunks of the surface out leaving potholes blighting the highways."
According to uSwitch, the average damage cause by potholes costs £240 to repair, and this could contribute to higher premiums for policy holders.
The wave of snow across the United Kingdom has already seen insurance companies deluged by claims, with Swiftcover reporting they were up by 75 per cent last week.
