Car insurance claims are set to rise as freezing temperatures cause damage to UK roads.
The cold spell has been blamed for the increasing amount of potholes appearing on roads and has led to fears that there are now around one and a half million potholes in the UK.
Mark Monteiro, insurance expert at uSwitch.com, highlighted the "uphill battle" local authorities were facing, claiming that the damage caused by the weather adds to a £1 billion backlog of repairs already needed on roads.
"As a result, it's possible that road conditions will remain poor for the time being and the number of insurance claims for damage to vehicles caused by potholes is likely to rocket," he commented.
Mr Monteiro went on to suggest that the situation will only increase the pace at which insurance premiums are rising, recommending drivers take extra care when travelling .
According to the Met Office the cold spell is set to continue until the middle of January.
