Drivers have been told to get to know their vehicle better in order to avoid having to make claims on their car insurance .
According to research carried out by M&S Car Insurance, only one in five motorists feel confident about using their car when driving it for the first time, while only 12 per cent bother to read the manual before setting off.
With many people expected to be driving new cars when the '10' registration number plate is released at the beginning of March, David Wells, head of insurance at M&S, feels they should take more time to get to know their motor.
"Whether it's a brand new car or a used vehicle, most garages should talk you through a vehicle before you drive it away," he said.
"To avoid taking risks and potentially causing an accident, it is important to take time to familiarise yourself with the features of a car that's new to you."
Meanwhile, a recent survey by Virgin Money found that 9.6 per cent of car insurance claims were from drivers with a five-year-old car.
Cars less than a year old only contributed to 2.3 per cent of claims.
