Drivers advised to take weather precautions to avoid car insurance claims

Tue, 23 Feb 2010

Research by Sainsbury's Finance suggests that many drivers risk having to make a claim on their car insurance because they do not take weather precautions.

Of those asked, 33 per cent do not even bother to check the weather forecast before heading out, while 27 per cent do not fully clear their front and rear windscreens prior to setting off.

With another cold snap hitting large parts of the country, Ben Tyte, car insurance manager at Sainsbury's, said: "Drivers should continue to take basic steps to ensure their own safety and that of other road users, especially while wintry conditions persist."

Best The firm also reminded drivers not to leave their car running in the morning to warm it up as this could lead to unwanted attention from "opportunistic thieves".

Winter conditions have taken their toll already, with reports of increases in car insurance claims over the past few months.

At the beginning of January, Swiftcover said that it had seen claims shoot up by 75 per cent compared to the same period last year.
