Car insurance customers told to check details of policy

Thu, 18 Feb 2010

Drivers have been urged to thoroughly check the details on their car insurance policy to make sure they don't suffer mistaken identity .

If the number plate is stightly wrong on the insurance policy, then there is the risk that police, using automatic number plate recognition technology, might stop a car as it could be deemed to be uninsured.

Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance, said that mistakes were often made either by the customer or by staff during the application process, and that the summary of cover and certificate should be checked.

He added: "Simple errors can result in a lot of wasted time and inconvenience for you, the police and your insurer - quite apart from the risk of temporarily having your car confiscated."

Around one in 20 vehicles are driven by uninsured drivers at the moment and this can lead to increased premiums for car insurance customers.

Recent legislation has been introduced to make sure that even cars that are off road require insurance, unless a Statutory Off Road Notification has been made.
