A car insurance company has claimed that British motorists need to improve their green driving habits.
In a study of European motorists, insurance firm AXA found that 84 per cent of British drivers use their car every day, compared to a European average of 78 per cent.
The study also showed that Brits drove longer distances and were more resistant to any legislation aimed at reducing carbon emissions.
Tina Shortle, marketing director at AXA Insurance, believes attitudes need to change and said that her organisation was working out incentives to get people to drive less.
She added: "Our study also looked at other features of driving behaviour and interestingly, the 'green' results are in stark contrast to the other areas around safe driving and keeping within the law, where British drivers largely outperformed other European nations."
M&S recently added features to its home insurance policy that could help people reduce their carbon footprint .
Any claims for household appliances such as fridges and washing machines will now warrant replacement with products that are A rated for energy-efficiency .
