The AA has expressed concern at the amount on claims being made on car insurance policies for damage caused by potholes.
Although a perennial problem, at the moment the company is seeing four times as many claims as in the same period last year.
Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance, pointed out that, while the potholes themselves do not necessarily cause enough damage to make a claim worthwhile, accidents caused by trying to avoid them can.
He said: "More commonly, our customers have either tried to avoid a pothole and hit something else, such as a kerb, or hitting a hole has caused them to momentarily lose control and hit another vehicle or object."
AA also advised drivers to get their cars checked at the first sign of vibrations or tyre damage caused by potholes.
Premiums have risen recently, according to a number of reports, partly as a result of an increase in injury claims .
However, as moneysupermarket.com has pointed out, it is still possible to find good deals by comparing offers from a number of different insurance companies .
