Some motorists who fit winter tyres to their vehicle are being charged higher insurance premiums, it has been claimed.
According to AA Insurance, some people have been told to pay up to 20 per cent more.
Although winter tyres should be much safer in the snow, some insurers have been counting them as a modification to the manufacturer's specifications, BBC News reported.
The Association of British Insurers (ABI) said providing tyres are fitted by a reputable garage, and in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions, Britons should not be charged a higher premium.
"The confusion may be through call centres, where that information is not getting through," the ABI's Malcolm Tarling told the publication.
"The fitting of winter tyres should not affect the risk," he concluded.
Meanwhile, Aviva recently launched a new car insurance policy aimed at large businesses in both the private and public sector, ladymotor.co.uk reported.
Under the new scheme, tailored car insurance policies are to be offered to employees who are leasing a company car.
