Adverse weather conditions are leading to an increase in car insurance claims this winter, new research has shown.
Data from The Co-operative Financial Services revealed that last weekend (December 18th and 19th) was one of the busiest for car insurance claims this year.
The figures are based on internal calculations by the organisation, which contrasted the findings for last weekend with those from the Saturday and Sunday before (December 11th and 12th).
David Neave, director of general insurance for The Co-operative, said: "Our figures show that the cold weather is having a real impact on motorists right across the country and we have seen a 40 per cent uplift in claims over the last weekend.
"With the busy Christmas travel period upon us, motorists should make sure that they drive responsibly, plan ahead and take extra time to complete their journey".
The Co-operative has compiled a list of top tips for drivers to follow to ensure they are protected during the bad weather.
Checking the vehicle's anti-freeze level and carrying de-icer are two suggestions from the organisation.
